Mark and I are currently in the process of securing our judges, finalizing the logo, and lining up fabulous event passes as prizes. Once we have a few more items nailed down, we'll launch the website and open registration.
A few teasers:
* One new division!
* Improvements to two existing divisions...including more variety and a bigger competitor pool in the popular showcase division!
* New event passes for prizes!
* Totally awesome non-event pass prizes!
* It will still be only $5/person/division, FREE to compete in the New Competitors Jack and Jill, and FREE to attend. Tell your friends and family!
Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 13, 2010. The first person that says s/he can't make it because s/he has to work with this much advance notice will no longer be my friend.

Registration is now open!
www.savoyswingjam.com
We are excited to announce some new and revamped competitions. All the details are on the website, but to whet your appetite:
Jack and Jill – Open
Intended for lindy hoppers dancing at an intermediate level and above and who have competition experience. Competitors register as a lead or follow. In the preliminary round, competitors will dance to several songs, dancing with a new partner each time. Multiple couples will be on the floor at all times during the prelims. In the final round, dancers will be randomly paired with a partner and be judged with that partner. Couples in the finals will dance in all-skates and spotlights, and all songs will be between 160-220 beats per minute. For spotlights, the song structure and number of phrases each couple has will not be announced prior to the competition. NOTE: An individual can enter either the New Competitors or Open Jack and Jill competition, but not both.
Jack and Jill – New (and Nearly New) Competitors
Designed for newer lindy hoppers who have no or very limited competition experience (for example, no more than one or two local level competitions). Competitors register as a lead or follow. Competitors will dance to several songs (between 140-180 beats per minute), dancing with a new partner each time. Multiple couples will be on the floor at all times; i.e. there will be no spotlights or separate finals round. Dancers will be judged individually. NOTE: An individual can enter either the New Competitors or Open Jack and Jill competition, but not both.
Strictly Lindy – Open
The Strictly Lindy competition is open to competitors of all skills levels. Competitors will register as a couple. In the preliminary round, couples will dance in an all-skate to several songs. In the final round, couples will dance in an all-skate and spotlight, and all songs will be between 180-265 beats per minute for the finals. Choreographed sequences are allowed but not required, and air steps and tricks are allowed. For spotlights, the song structure and number of phrases each couple has will not be announced prior to the competition. NOTE: Couples can enter either the Open Strictly Lindy or the Strictly Lindy - New Partners, but not both.
Strictly Lindy - New Partners
The Strictly Lindy - New Partners competition is open to competitors that have either never entered or entered only one or two local-level strictly competitions. In short, you don’t have a regular partner, but you want to throw your hat in the Strictly ring! Competitors will register as a couple. Couples will dance in two heats, in an all-skate to several songs. There will not be spotlights or separate finals round. All songs will be between 160-230 beats per minute. Choreographed sequences are allowed but not required, and air steps and tricks are allowed. NOTE: Couples can enter either the Strictly Lindy - New Partners or the Open Strictly Lindy, but not both.
Authentic Solo Jazz
Dancers of all skill levels are encouraged to enter this competition. Competitors enter individually. All competitors will dance at the same time, to three songs of varying types. All songs will be in an authentic jazz style, but can vary between swing, Charleston/hot jazz, and slow/blues, for example. Judges will select finalists on the spot, and immediately move into the final round. In the final round, all finalists will dance at the same time to two different songs of varying types.
Short Showcase - No Holds Barred
This division is open to dancers of all skill levels, but those with limited to no choreographed performance experience are strongly encouraged to enter. Competitors may enter as individuals, couples or teams; there may be no more than six individuals per entry. There are no gender-based requirements. Individuals are limited to one entry in this division. Competitors will perform an original-choreographed routine to 30-60 seconds of pre-recorded jazz-era (or modern swing) music of their choosing. Dancing must be lindy hop and/or from the jazz era. Dancers are required to edit their music (either to cut or fade) and submit it in advance. Competitors may choose any part of their song to perform to; i.e. it need not be the first 30 seconds. Originality and new material encouraged, although not required. Costumes are also not required but overall presentation will be considered by the judges.

Check out www.savoyswingjam.com for a list of our prizes!
Savoy Swing Jam is a great opportunity for dancers of all skill levels to compete. We strive to create a friendly, low stress environment especially so that new competitors have the best possible experience! I was inspired by the creativity, positive attitidue, and comraderie that we saw from our scene at last year's event and expect that spirit to thrive in 2010!
New Competitors: Remember that the New Competitor Jack and Jill is FREE! AND the winners will take home passes to one over most coveted events. (Which one? Well...you'll have to wait and see. )
It's free to attend the event - bring your friends, coworkers, family to see you dance! It's the perfect opportunity!

Registrations are rolling in now!
Never competed? This is the time! Savoy Swing Jam offers a friendly, supportive environment in which to dip your toe into competitive lindy hop.
Last year, the (FREE) New Competitors Jack and Jill was one of my favorite divisions - the newcomers totally killed it!
We were so excited about our newer dancers competing last year, that we decided to offer a SECOND division for those with little competitive experience - the New Partner Strictly Divison! In this division, dancers with no to few previous competition entries sign up with a partner they haven't competed with before.
Find details on all of the divisions on the Competitions page at www.savoyswingjam.com.
And all of our division winners will take home AWESOME event passes - check out the About Us page for a list of what we've got cooking so far.
See you on March 13th! _________________ Savoy Swing Jam ~ March 2011

Say I wanted to enter the New Competitors Jack & Jill as a Follow, would this preclude me from entering the open Jack & Jill as a Lead?
Am I even eligible to enter the NC as a follow? _________________

Hi Alex,
Great question! We've considered this scenario and decided that if a dancer is ineligible to participate in the New Competitor J&J by virtue of their general experience and skill level, then that applies to them regardless of which partnered role they are interested in dancing. Therefore, this caveat holds true regardless of interest in participating as a lead or follow:
